Gone is the beige wall paint, replaced by a bright white, along with new baseboards and door casings. The dark hardwood floors gave way to French oak in a Bayonne finish from California Classics. So, the bedroom retained the precious view, although the dining room, with an abundance of windows on two walls, is bright with natural light and faces a separate patio.
We wanted the living room and dining room to have a view.”īut the cost to remove a load-bearing wall in that area was prohibitive, given everything else being planned. “In France, you put the bedroom where you don’t have a view because we just go to sleep,” said the husband. That way their guests would get the benefit of the view. Initially, the couple wanted to create a more French-style space by converting the spacious ground floor primary bedroom, with its stunning view, into the dining room and using the smaller dining room area as their bedroom. All of the bathrooms were refreshed by refinishing existing cabinets and adding new countertops and accessories. “The arches in most areas of the home were squared out and opened up.”Īmong the other elements of the project were squaring off the curved stairs on the base level, replacing the carpeting on the steps with white oak flooring and adding new iron handrails. “We ripped out all the flooring and installed new (floors), ripped out the existing kitchen and installed new cabinets, counters, backsplash, plumbing and appliances,” she said. Tran said that the scope of the project was to update all the interior finishes and modernize the home as much as possible. The couple moved to a rental during the six-month renovation, which began in January 2022. Revisions would be made based on how they all envisioned each space and detail.
Tran would select and present the initial finishes, such as tile and paint, and get feedback from the couple. We worked hard in the beginning to nail down their vision and then once we got our concepts in check, we moved into selecting finishes for all the spaces.” Tran said the couple “were a big part of the design process. The couple had discussed making some structural changes - such as squaring off dated hallway arches and removing bathroom walls that divided the main space from the toilet and shower - and found that Tran, with her expertise in that area, was a natural choice.Īs Tran got to know the homeowners, she learned their style is “young, fresh, clean lines, modern but livable.” And, with two young boys, everything in the house “had to be durable, cleanable and maintainable.” The couple hired the firm, which assigned the project to senior designer Janice Tran. The husband did research on Yelp to find an interior designer and was impressed by the ratings for Blythe Interiors in San Diego. “You can visit a terrible hotel and you have to have the vision to be able to transform the space to make a spectacular event. “My job is to be creative,” she explained.
